How to Store and Handle Your Weight Loss Pen Correctly
Your weight loss pen is a precision medical device containing a temperature-sensitive medication. Storing and handling it incorrectly can degrade the medication, reduce its effectiveness, or cause it to fail entirely — so getting this right matters.
Here's everything you need to know about storing, handling, and caring for your GLP-1 pen.
Temperature: The Most Critical Factor
GLP-1 medications are protein-based, which means they are sensitive to heat and freezing. Exposure to temperatures outside the recommended range can denature (break down) the active ingredient, rendering the medication ineffective — sometimes without any visible sign that anything is wrong.
Unopened / Unused Pens
Store in the refrigerator at 2°C–8°C (36°F–46°F).
- Keep them in the main body of the fridge — not the door, where temperatures fluctuate more
- Do not store near the freezer compartment or ice-maker
- Do not freeze — a pen that has been frozen should not be used
- Keep in the original packaging to protect from light
In-Use Pens
Once you begin using a pen, most GLP-1 medications can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C / 86°F) for a defined period — typically 4–8 weeks depending on the specific product. Always check the patient information leaflet that came with your medication for the exact timeframe.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources (radiators, car dashboards, windowsills)
- Do not refrigerate and take out repeatedly — temperature cycling accelerates degradation
- Once the stated room-temperature period has passed, discard even if medication remains
Never Freeze Your Pen
Freezing permanently damages the medication. If you accidentally freeze a pen, do not attempt to thaw and use it — dispose of it and use a new one.
Travelling With Your Weight Loss Pen
Travel requires extra planning to keep your pen within the safe temperature range.
Short trips (day out, commute):
- Carry in a cool bag or insulated pouch away from direct sun
- Avoid leaving in a hot car — even briefly
Long-haul travel / flights:
- Always carry your pen in your hand luggage, never in checked baggage (aircraft holds can freeze)
- Use a purpose-made medication travel cooler for journeys longer than a few hours
- Most airlines and border agencies will accept a letter from your prescriber confirming the medication — carry this with you
Hot climates:
- A personal insulin cooler (widely available, reusable) is ideal for keeping your pen at the right temperature in warm weather
Handling and Injection Technique
Before Each Injection
- Check the medication — it should be clear or slightly yellow. Do not use if it appears cloudy, discoloured, or contains visible particles
- Check the expiry date on the pen — do not use an expired pen
- Let the pen reach room temperature if it's been refrigerated — 15–30 minutes out of the fridge makes the injection more comfortable
- Wash your hands thoroughly before handling
Needle Attachment
- Attach a new needle for every injection — never reuse needles
- Remove the needle promptly after injection to prevent air bubbles entering the cartridge and to reduce infection risk
- Store the pen without a needle attached
Injection Sites
Rotate between approved injection sites to prevent skin thickening (lipohypertrophy), which can impair absorption:
- Abdomen (at least 5cm away from the navel)
- Upper thigh
- Upper arm (outer area)
Keep a simple rotation log if needed to ensure you're not repeatedly injecting the same spot.
Safe Disposal
Used needles are classified as sharps waste and must be disposed of safely — not in household rubbish.
How to dispose:
- Use an approved sharps disposal container (available from pharmacies)
- When full, return to a pharmacy, GP surgery, or designated sharps collection point for safe disposal
- Never recap used needles with two hands — use the single-hand scoop method if recapping is necessary
Whole pens, once empty, should also be disposed of in a sharps container or as directed by your pharmacist.
Signs Your Pen May Have Been Compromised
Discard and replace your pen if:
- It has been frozen
- It has been left in temperatures above 30°C for any period
- The medication appears cloudy, discoloured, or contains particles
- The pen was dropped and the mechanism seems damaged
- The expiry date has passed
When in doubt, contact your prescriber or pharmacist before using.
